Graphic Information: Image comes from a photograph of a skull alleged to be that of 17th century French Philosopher, René Descartes. Upon his death in 1650, his remains were buried in a cemetery reserved for the 'godless' in what was a strictly Protestant country. Upon exhumation from his first resting place, his remains were literally split up for a number of reasons; his fingers taken for posterity, his bones for jewelry and his skull, at first taken for historical significance, was later used by "entrepreneurs" and toured for profit. The marks on the skull front were apparently inscribed in the mid 18th century, as to "properly identify" the skull. His body still remains in several locations throughout Europe.
